Equipment: crafting, merging & equipping

This document covers everything you need to know about combat gear in Nomstead: where weapons and shields come from, how to upgrade them through the merge system, and how to equip them before a fight.

Equipment slots

Each player has three combat slots:

sword

Melee weapons (swords)

Adjacent slash attacks

bow

Ranged weapons (crossbows)

Pierce attacks at distance

shield

Shields and pavises

Passive armor / damage reduction

You can have one item equipped per slot at any time.

Craft equipment

Equipment is crafted by you, but the recipes come from the village NPCs. Each NPC specializes in a category and lives next to (or sells the recipes for) a specific tool:

Tom

Swords, shields, pavises

anvil

Sarah

Crossbows

workbench

Gus

Alchemy table and potion recipes

Crafting weapons & shields

The full loop is the same for every craftable item:

  1. Buy the recipe from the right NPC. Walk up to Tom or Sarah and purchase the recipe you want. Recipes go into your recipes inventory.

  2. Gather the materials. The recipe lists everything you need (e.g. iron ingots + wood planks). Some materials come from gathering (mining, chopping), others from other crafting tools.

  3. Stand on a tile that has the right tool. Crafting a sword needs an anvil; crafting a crossbow needs a workbench.

  4. Open the tool and craft. Crafting consumes the listed materials, spends a small amount of your energy, and adds the finished item to your inventory.

Base craftable weapons & shields

These are the entry-level items, crafted directly from raw materials:

Iron sword

Tom / anvil

Breaks after a number of fights

Silver sword

Tom / anvil

Tougher iron alternative

Wooden crossbow

Sarah / workbench

Range, breaks after fights

Iron shield

Tom / anvil

Slash-resistant

Iron pavise

Tom / anvil

Pierce-resistant

Silver shield

Tom / anvil

Slash-resistant, more durable

Silver pavise

Tom / anvil

Pierce-resistant, more durable

Demon items cannot be crafted from materials.

The merge system (tier upgrade)

Every weapon and shield in the game has three tiers:

Base β†’ Fine β†’ Masterwork

Each step roughly doubles the gear (you sacrifice two of the lower tier to forge one of the next), increases its stats, and where applicable extends its durability. To merge, you need a special merge recipe sold by the matching NPC.

How a merge works

  1. Buy the merge recipe. Tom sells recipes for swords and shields; Sarah sells the equivalent for crossbows. Each merge recipe costs 500 silvers.

  2. Have two copies of the lower-tier item in your inventory. To craft a Fine iron sword you need 2 Γ— Iron sword. To craft a Masterwork iron sword you need 2 Γ— Fine iron sword.

  3. Use the right tool. Sword/shield merges happen at the anvil; crossbow merges happen at the workbench. As with any crafting, the tool must be on a tile you own.

  4. Craft. The two source items are consumed and one upgraded item appears in your inventory. Energy is spent the same way as a normal craft.

What the tiers buy you

The exact stat bumps vary by weapon family, but in general:

  • Damage goes up at every tier.

  • Stamina cost typically goes down at every tier β€” masterwork gear lets you swing more times before getting exhausted.

  • Range can extend on ranged weapons (crossbows reach further at higher tiers).

  • Durability roughly doubles between tiers for non-rare gear, so a Masterwork iron sword lasts much longer in combat than its base counterpart before breaking.

  • Shields and pavises don't gain damage but get tougher resistance values, soaking more incoming damage.

Demon-tier gear (the rarest) starts strong at base and scales up the furthest at masterwork β€” it's the gold standard of endgame equipment.

Equipping & unequipping

Once you own a wieldable item, you assign it to its slot from the inventory:

  1. Open the Inventory modal.

  2. Pick the item (sword, crossbow, or shield/pavise).

  3. Click Equip. The item now shows the equipped badge and is the weapon you'll bring into your next fight.

  4. To swap, equip a different item β€” it replaces whatever was in that slot. To remove without replacing, click Unequip.

Each slot holds one item at a time. Equipping a Masterwork iron sword will replace your Fine iron sword in the sword slot.

Combat lock

You cannot change your gear while a fight is active.

Quick reference: who do I visit?

  • Need a sword, shield or pavise β†’ Tom, then craft / merge at an anvil.

  • Need a crossbow β†’ Sarah, then craft / merge at a workbench.

  • Want to upgrade existing gear β†’ buy the matching Fine or Masterwork recipe from the same NPC, then merge two copies of the lower tier at the matching tool.

  • Need potions for combat β†’ Lily at the alchemy table.

  • Need food for stamina/energy β†’ Gus at the kitchen.

Once you've crafted or merged the gear you want, just open your inventory, click Equip, and you're ready to fight.
